Introduction

Ahmedabad is a city with versatile art and cultural history. The city has grown with different artists migrating from different parts of the country and around the world. The idea of an art residency program in Ahmedabad is to bring different kinds of artists to an environment where they can create to enrich the cultural value of the city at large. It will be a place where people can connect to stories and cultural ideologies with a tangible language.
Nirvān

Nirvān is an environment where nature meets creators with a sense of calmness allowing them to escape from the urban grunge. It is a platform for young emerging artists to create and be in an environment where they can interact with other artists to opening possibilities of collaborations and cross learnings. It is to allow the audience to interact with creators and admire there philosophy to encourage appreciation and understanding of art and its role in society. Nirvān is a platform to provide accessibility of the art to a variety of audiences and to support and meet educational requirements and benefit of the community at large.

Site and Context

Ahmedabad is a city that has grown around the bank of river Sabarmati. The riverbank has evolved with time and it stands out to be an important context in the history of Ahmedabad. The riverfront is a preferable location for this art center as it connects to the existing cultural centers of the city like Sanskar Kendra, NID, Conflictorium, and The Tagor hall, this connect will help bridge activities and events to celebrate and uplift and cultural values of the city. The site location allows an easy access to the old city and the new city.
The project is a reverse process to design a building. Nirvān, is an art centre which is to be visualized on the cultural patch of Riverfront, Ahmedabad. The design process starts by creating small studio spaces in isolation which leads to creation of a kit of spaces. These individual spaces are arranged to make a functional composition out of it and then, giving it it's skin. The architecture of Nirvān is to define that 'The journey is more important than the destination'
