Digital Book Publishing + Motion Graphics

Digital Publishing + Motion Graphics (2019)
A joint subject with motion graphics, students were tasked to design a book cover and submit designs for foreword pages, table of contents page, page contents and a credit page. What made it more challenging was the fact that each item must bear individual unique design styles. Lastly, the book contents itself required augmented-reality (AR) motion graphics videos in it to accompany the text. With these conditions set in place, here are the designs I submitted following the given theme and book contents for the project.
Note: To view the videos, the Zappar mobile application is required in order to scan the black-and-white Zappar logo on the book content pages.
What sparked the book cover design for me was the book contents itself. Therefore, I did a compilation art of all the materials in the book and have them visualised following the flow of the Malaysian flag waving in the background.
For the foreword pages, I went with a more minimalistic approach. To do this, I experimented around with text manipulation and decided to go with a whimsical design.
Every chapter and its page numbers in the book to be published was given to all students in order to have the table of contents page created. As the book itself was about superstitions, I placed another superstition into the design itself which was the 'red string of fate' to connect the two images above.
Next, I made two page spreads of the page contents. The first piece involved the Chinese tradition of having movie shooting ceremonies for new movies so I incorporated the important elements of the joss sticks and red cloth used. The second piece explained how there are certain days where pigs cannot be slaughtered according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Therefore, important elements such as the Chinese calendar in the top left and butcher knives in the top right were used in order to signify that.
Lastly, a credits page design was to be made of all the contributors to the published book. The colours of credits page was actually inspired by the fact that all the contributors were from Sunway University so it felt appropriate to incorporate the university colours into the credits page.
