Challenge

Students were tasked to design an experimental typeface of their liking. We were given complete creative liberty and encouraged to think as out-of-the-box as possible.

Outcome

Disc is a visual representation of how I experience music. I love watching alternative rock bands play live at underground venues, with grunge posters and band stickers lining the hallways. Mysterious lights of various colours flood the room and the atmosphere is obscure. That was the inspiration behind Disc - I wanted to create an unorthodox typeface that captured the essence of live music shows, and that was unlike any other typeface I had seen before. I laser cut CDs and placed them in their cases reverse side-up to create an eye-catching typeface filled with translucency and refraction. Each letter was created within the confines of the CD’s existing shape, forcing myself to create new solutions for each letter. The uniformity of the cases contrasts the eccentricity of each letter, creating a visual balance and making the typeface easy to use. Disc is suitable for promotional material of concerts, art exhibitions, and any other events of experimental nature.
