Project Clay | Exploring the medium

Project Clay |  Exploring the medium

My summer of 2019 was spent in CLAD Institute of art and design, Thrissur.
The studio gave me an opportunity to practice my sculpting skill and study clay mold and cast.

Fallen
I started off by making a few rough sketches of a horse, which I chose to study. Sketching session went long where I studied the anatomy and works of artists George Stubbs, Theodore Gericault, and Eugene Delacroix.
After choosing a few poses to work on, clay was taken and it is mixed and beaten to remove air, small stones and dirt from it.
Later the central spine was made using clay and then more clay was added to sculpt the figures.
It took one day for each pose and three figures were finished.

Descend, Fallen, and Lost.
Descend.
Fallen.
Lost.
Later I tried to abstract the form and implement the lessons from the previous studies to make a random creature and ended up with this.
Previous visual influences and no initial sketches were the reason this try ended up in a commonly seen dragon figure.
Whenever I was not working on the horses I found myself helping the clay mural team in the studio and studied clay mold and cast.
The leaves for a mural tree shown here were thus molded and casted.
Thank you.
