SURVIVE WITH CAUTION
Reimagining my Message Not Sent (2019) photo series.
In 2019, I exhibited a photo series which tackles the danger of excessive immersion to cyberspace. People’s obsession and reliance to the Web, social media platforms, and various digital content to achieve sense of belongingness within the society has led to unconscious abandonment of one’s unique identity. The identity that is lost in the sea of conformity and drowned by a modern form of peer-pressure. Fast forward to now, as the world faces health crisis, people become reliant to the cyberspace more than ever. We resort to digital platforms to stay connected with friends, to continue education, or to keep businesses afloat. The virtual reality has become everyone’s reality. In this light, I would like to bring back the photos I exhibited a year ago. This is to remind everyone that during this trying time, we have to preserve what is genuine and true, the self. That we should not let go of our unique identity, and we should survive with caution.
