Penguin Book Cover Competition: The Wind In The Willows
Book Cover Design

Brief:
Re-design the cover for the children's classic The Wind in the Willows. Designs must have an imaginative concept, be effective on their own and create impact in a crowded bookshop setting.

Interpretation:
Envisaging this brief as a form of relaunch, I believed that it needed something quite different to catch people's attention to this classic.  There needed to be a form of interaction between the children and these animal characters. So my designs came to be a series of different covers, all to be shelved together forming block colours along the spine and increasing their span on the shelves. It gave children choice. The primary reason for this style of full-facial illustration is that when children read the book, holding it in front of their faces they become the characters to the outside world.
