When starting my work placement at Model Makers Cardiff, i was given the task of adding trees, cars and benches to a model base board the team had already made. As it was my first time working with professionally made models, this simple task assessed how able I was at working in a work shop/studio environment, and how capableI was with the tools provided. When the buildings that the team had made were then added to the board, it showed how much adding the little details of benches and foliage finished off the overall model.
For my remaining time at Model Makers, I was able to see a project from start to finish. My first task was to draw up sme simple houses in CAD, but them out on Acrylic and put them together in their different layers. These different layers allow for the windows to be glazed and se back from the cladding, along with the use of floorplates in the building to stop the houses from looking empty.
Once the Houses were made, each componant has to be sprayed with a primer. Each house then had tp be sprayed with their final colour before assembling them, ensuring that each house was sprayed the correct colour, corresponding to their plot number.
The final stage of getting the houses to a finished state was to put them together, Each house had floorplates, roof's, glazing and cladding layers that has to be assembled, so it was essential to make sure each of these layers were paced in the perfect position to allign with the model base.
Once all of the Houses were put together, i was assigned to help some of the team members make the model base board. This model in particular had a lot of level changes within the landscape, so it was essential every piece was places in the exact place, to ensure all the houses sat flat. To get the base looking as authentic as possible, it is covered in different layers of acrylic to create curbs along the roads, and with big level changes the base had to be sanded to make it as smooth as possible. After masking and spraying the base with different layers to create the grass, paving, payvement and road, we were then able to add the foliage, fencing and houses. We then added model people and cars to finish the model off ocmpletely.
