Memento Vivere / Remember to Live

This painting served as the source of inspiration for a series of merchandises for @somethingstokeep, but I have only just finished painting it! The background is deeply inspired by one of my favourite painting by Arnold Böcklin, titled 'The Island of the Dead'.

The bouquet of flowers that he holds all has special meanings, based on the Victorian language of flowers;

Marigold for 'Grief and Remembrance'

Lily of the Valley means 'The Return of Happiness'

Alum Lilly for 'Resurrection'

Poppy for 'Eternal Sleep and Consolation'

Mistletoe means 'Surmounting All Difficulties'

Though we are all going through troubled times, remembering to do small happy things are important because they allow us to forget the dark for a little while and not let it define our days.
