The Process
What I did: During the last solar eclipse in Colorado, I thought it would be fun to learn more about the different types of eclipses and how they are formed. My inspiration for this project was my daughter. I wanted her to have a resource that explained what we were viewing in depth.
I analyzed the content using various online resources to understand the two types of eclipses and put this content into a storyboard. From there, I designed learning objectives and learning outcomes to create measures to test the learners at the end of the course. I decided that an eLearning module would be an effective approach to deliver the training to allow for an asynchronous learning experience to combine with a synchronous live experience (viewing the eclipse at a specific location with the rest of the world.)
I designed the materials in the context of the workflow by using graphics that resembled the solar system. I designed these graphics in Adobe Illustrator.
To keep the learning in a conversation format, I used an Articulate Storyline character to guide the learner through the content. I used layers within the tool to chunk the information out to consume easily.
Lastly, the assessment at the end of the learning used a combination of interactive drag and drop, multiple choice and text entry to engage the learner's cognitive load. Imagery and verbal cues were used to help with the assessment as well.
