REAL The Canadian Kids Magazine

Having read this piece, I loved the part about how Squirrel Monkeys were sold through comic books a long time ago! It was then that I decided to layout the story as a retro comic. I sourced out the picture of an original ad of a monkey curled up in a coffee mug, and placed him (and a caption) in speech bubble. I illustrated the monkey in the title using Adobe Illustrator, made image corrections on Photoshop, and layed out the piece on InDesign.
This story was created for the Kindergarten to Grade Three edition of the magazine. The photos that were provided gave me a woodsy, earthy impression, so I used that colour pallette when creating this layout.
The idea for this spread was to mimic the textures and colours that were used in the author's book covers. It's a promotional piece, as well as a biography, for Kevin Sylvester.

This is a two page spread and cover that I did for the 2012 Spring Issue of REAL. The artist had created a smokey effect using water, coffee cream and food colouring. This was my inspiration for the title of the layout. Rather than using an existing font, I created a font to appear as though it was part of the art. I used Adobe Photoshop to create the effect.
This two page spread is a compilation of jokes for the elementary edition of REAL. I chose different fonts and images to reflect the content, giving the layout a comical, light feel.
I took inspiration from the 'phobia' section of the puzzle page content, and chose a palette of greys and different shades of purple. I love to mix different type faces, and chose ones that I felt were appropriate for the piece.
