Origins and Uses of Jacquard Fabric

Following decades of experience in the textile industry, David Raminfard founded New Point Fabric in 2011. David Raminfard also leads KasLen Textiles, LLC, which has sold high-quality fabric for more than five decades. The company’s offerings include fabrics for upholstery and industrial purposes such as linen, silk, and Jacquard.

Jacquard is a type of weaved fabric that incorporates patterns and intricate designs. The textile was first introduced by Joseph Marie Jacquard, the inventor of the Jacquard loom. As a youth, Jacquard worked in the textile industry, where creating patterned brocades was labor-intensive and often relied on child workers.

Determined to improve work conditions, Jacquard created a machine that could be programmed by the weaver to make different patterns. This device reduced much of the time-consuming aspects of creating brocade fabric and made Jacquard more accessible for casual use. While the looms have been modernized, Jacquard’s basic design is still in use today. Jacquard fabric is most commonly found on bed sheets, outerwear, and suit sets.
