About “Group Show of Contemporary Artists”

“Group Show of Contemporary Artist" is an exhibition hold by Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

The exhibition seeks to encourage contemporary artists in their pursuit of art from new perspectives. In “Group Show of Contemporary Artist 2020”, three groups were selected through a rigorous juried process, displaying works of painting, photography, sculpture, and installation.

都美セレクショングループ展について

「都美セレクショングループ展」は東京美術館が新しい発想によるアートの作り手を応援する展覧会です。

今回「都美セレクショングループ展 2020」では、応募の中から厳正な審査を経て選ばれた 3グループが展覧会を実施し、

絵画、写真、彫刻、インスタレーションなど様々なジャンルの作品を紹介します。

"East Asian Painting: Possibilities of Transformation of Nihonga"

Beyond the differences in their cultures, languages, and values, students and artists come to Japan from the East Asian countries to pursue the same goal for master the authentic way of Nihonga. Painting called as Nihonga is now being opened to East Asia. How do you capture this ironic phenomenon in which convergence and diffusion over Nihonga are two sides of the same coin? As international students from Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan studying at Tama Art University, we would like to explore new possibilities of “East Asian painting” that transcends the framework of “Japan” and “Japanese” through this exhibition.

東アジア絵画のなかへ：トランスする「日本画」の可能性

「日本画」を学ぶために、東アジアの各地域から価値観、文化、言葉の違いを越えて多くの学生や芸術家たちが日本にやって来る。これまで「日本画」と呼ばれてきた絵画は、現在、彼らによって東アジアへと開かれつつある。「日本画」をめぐる収斂と拡散が表裏一体となるこの皮肉な現象をどう捉えればよいのだろうか。同じ学窓に学ぶ韓国、台湾、中国の留学生、そして日本人学生である私たちは、この展覧会を通して「日本」「日本人」という枠組みを乗り越える「東アジア絵画」という新たな可能性を追究したい。

About "Convergence" and "Diffusion"

At the stage of devising the visuals, we noticed the keywords "Convergence and Diffusion" and incorporated the graphic elements that represent this concept into the background. Artists from different cultures (Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan) meet in Japan (the four circles that connected) and spread their artistry through "Nihonga" (radiation).

「収斂と拡散」について

ビジュアルを考案する段階、PHLは「収斂と拡散」というキーワードを気づき、この概念を図形化にしたグラフィック要素を背景に取り入れました。日本、韓国、中国、台湾それぞれ違う文化のアーティストが日本で出会い（四つの円が繋がる）、そして「日本画」を通して自分の芸術性を拡散する（放射線）。ということを、作品のメインコンテクストではなく、違う面から見えてきた「もう一つの文脈」として表現しました。
