Squash originated at Harrow School, a boys’ school outside of London, in the mid-nineteenth century. The boys played a game called “baby racquets” by hitting a ball with a racquet against the walls of a nook in the play yard. In 1865 Harrow opened up courts meant for Rugby fives, but the boys instead played their game of baby racquets. This game eventually came to be called squash and is now played all over the world.

Squash is typically played in a four-walled court with two players. Each player has a squash racquet, and a rubber ball is used. Each game is played to 11 points, and usually, a match will consist of five games. After the ball is served, players must hit the ball before it bounces twice, keep the ball inbounds, and keep it above the strip of metal on the front wall to avoid letting the other player score a point.
