April 9th in the Philippines is Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), a national holiday that commemorates the heroism of Filipino freedom fighters during World War II. Today it also pays tribute to the modern-day heroes: the frontliners out in the hospitals and in the field, risking their lives to save others affected by the pandemic, and the ordinary workers putting themselves in harm's way in the service of others.
