Week 9: Editorial Design 2 / Typographic Hierarchy

DVB201: Week 9 - Editorial Design 2
Task 1: Critique and Redesign
Healthy Magazine – Issue 166, June/July 2021
What resources did the designer use to visually represent the structure of the content, to create a visual hierarchy on the page (typeface, position, scale/size, weight, colour, contrast, orientation)?
Two different typefaces used to differentiate the titles from the main title and subtitle. At the same time, the designer also made use of the multiple weight, size and colour of the texts.

Serif typeface used for the main title and the subtext, located at the top of the spread, uses the same typeface but different font size and colour. The subtext has a grey shaded colour and smaller font size compared to the main title.

Sans-serif typeface used for the subtitle and body text, located at the middle of the spread, uses the same typeface with smaller font size, weight and colour. The subtitle has a larger font size, bolded and black font colour, compared to the body text with smaller font size and grey font colour.

What do you think works:
     - The use of the two different typefaces shows the grouping of the texts.
     - The 3 columns text organise the texts neatly on the spread.
What doesn't & why:
     - The layout of the instruction text, as one has the number to show the step by step instruction. However, the other does not.
     - The image at the top of the page feels isolated and does not belong to the text below.

Redesign the page your way:

Style guide:
Title - Baskerville Old Face, 45pt
Sub text - Baskerville Old Face, 11 pt
Subtitle - Gotham, Bold, 14pt
Body text - Gotham, Light, 11pt
Ingredient text - Gotham, Medium, 11pt

In this redesigning of the spread, I decided to keep the three columns layout of the magazine spread. There are two main changes done. Firstly, I switch the position of the title and image so I could group the Avocado-kale chip toast together. Secondly, I added a line between the two recipes to separate them.
Task 2: Event Program - Conference line up
