Task 1: Critique and Redesign
Structure
The magazine spread contains a prominent main title, 2 less obvious subtitles in the “Commentary” and “The F/W 2010 Issue”, small by-line, and body text. The two most prominent features of the spread are the main title and the body of text.

The main title is a flush left alignment, contrasting the body text which has a flush right alignment.

Analysis
The visual hierarchy is set out in a way that allows the reader to understand what the article is about, and then draws their attention to the text. To know the finer details, such as which section of the article or when the article was made, the reader must search a little bit before finding that information, as the typeface, colour, and size of those styles are delicate and small. Unfortunately, this is also the case when trying to find the author of the page, as it is in a small-sized typeface with a light weight, and therefore low contrast.

Opinion
I believe the size of the title brings focus to it, which is a positive. However, I do not like the low contrast, light typeface that was chosen. Additionally, I believe placing the author to the bottom right of the title, and underneath the text, is a poor decision as it was the last thing I read, and I felt I had to go searching for it. A more intuitive place would have been directly underneath the text, or where the “F/W 2010 Issue” subtitle is. Another design choice I question is the use of an indentation approximately 2 fifths of the way down the body text. As this indentation does not align with the title that is sitting right next to it, I found this a rather odd choice and was happy to rectify that in my redesign.
In redesigning this page, I was able to rectify some of the hierarchical objections I had with the original. This including choosing a more bold title, and playing around with its spacing. I felt it important to give the author credit, and I did this by putting her name in the middle of the title so that it was not an element that had to be searched for.

The second thing I wanted to change was the odd indentation in the body text, so I did that by sticking to a single-width text. I am much happier with how this looks compared to the original. Additionally, I was able to put the section of the magazine at the bottom of the page, as well as the page number, as that felt more intuitive.

To create this spread, I used grids containing 9 columns and 8 rows, and I am happy with how everything sits in comparison to each other. I believe it is a well balanced page.
