Reverse Engineer: Landscape Illustration

I’ve recently been experimenting with patterns and texture in Adobe Illustrator and found myself looking for examples in artwork. I was browsing fellow artist’s work here on Behance and found this Landscape Illustration by Jane Goncharenko

I really admire Jane’s use of design principles in creating her illustration. The principles that really stand out to me are: Repetition, Variety, and Movement. She manages to accomplish all three of these principles with her use of patterns.

The different shapes of the patterns used on the mountains create contrasting visual elements which lend to the variety on Jane’s illustration. Patterns used as color gradients create texture, making things look closer or further away by creating the sense of depth.

The repetition of pattern use in this design, while offering to variety, also provides a sense of unity to the landscape, tying all the elements together.

Jane also used patterns to create movement in her landscape illustration. Movement, keeps your eye moving around the design. She has accomplished this using different shapes and patterns inside the trees, mountains and clouds that keep the eye moving.

Over all, I really love Jane’s use of color. The purples, blues, and greens make her landscape look like blue hour (just before sunrise or just after sunset). I love the way the buildings look as if they’ve turned pink because of the light.
Thanks to Jane Goncharenko for creating such a visually interesting, beautiful piece of art! Check out more of Jane’s work here
