Task 3 | Critique and Redesign

Frankie Magazine Issue 87

What is the structure of the content (main titles, subtitles, times/dates, menu, contact information, news text, body text, etc)?

This article found within the Frankie Magazine has a very simple layout, considering it does hold a significant amount of information in both text and image form. The left side of the spread is taken fully by one still image showing the subject of the article; a hair stylist and salon owner in Sydney. As for the right hand side structure, it consists of two images side by side on the top half of the page and the type below it taking up the bottom half. As for the structure of this typography, it is split into two columns – on the left side at the top the title is displayed in a deep green colour using a modern and bold serif fonts with design flares on particular glyphs, and below the title a modern, spaced and capitalised san serif is used to display the subtitle/blurb. A moderate amount of space is then left between this and the body text which is shown in a generic san serif font, with contrast between the question and answers being shown through the use of boldness/regular display. This body text then rolls into the second column.

What resources did the designer use to visually represent the structure of the content, to create a visual hierarchy on the page (typeface, position, scale/size, weight, colour, contrast, orientation)?

To create visual hierarchy on the page, the designer used large and visually interesting images to immediately draw the eye in. These were placed on the left, as generally the eye moved from left to right, and on the top of the page. The eye then moves down the page to the title which was strategically make larger, with a bright colour and with a heavier weighting  in order for this to happen. The eye then moves down the column to the smaller text font and continues to do so.

What do you think works? What doesn't and why?

I think the designer has done a beautiful job at displaying a large amount of information onto this magazine spread. Through using strategic structure to create visual hierarchy as well as suitable typefaces, colour pallets and engaging images to create an aesthetic approach; the page achieves its purpose

My Re-design:

Because I thought the designer did such a great job, I didn’t feel there was an excessive amount to change within my redesign. However, what I did want to do was create a bit more flow through the text as it was a Q&A and I believed this was important to do. I stuck with the two columns, however I placed both images in the first column, one below the other, and the text on the right hand side. This created contrast between the images and the text while still keeping the great structure and visual hierarchy the original designer has constructed.
