Complete Process of Sand Casting and Its Benefit

Aluminum sand casting is highly used in making cast-iron and steel parts of medium to large size in which surface smoothness and dimensional precision are not of primary importance.

Sand casting is a casting-based process that utilizes a sand mold. The process is so popular that it can be used in lots of different industries.

Process

The process of the sand casting gets started with making the sand mold pattern. The pattern created on the sand will determine the size and shape of the product that has to be created. Setting up the gating system is the second step. The gating system usually includes the pouring cup and gates that funnel the molten metal to different parts of the mold cavity.

Once there is the creation of the pattern and gating system then the mold pattern is removed. The sand is no longer required because it has already taken the mold’s shape. Molten metal can be poured into the mold cavity once it is removed. The aluminum sand casting process allows a manufacturer to make use of different types of metals including steel, aluminum, tin, zinc, iron, and bronze. Which metal will be used will depend on the product and for melting it may need to be heated to over 3000 degrees Fahrenheit and get it to flow easily.
