Ciletuh Public Restroom

A roof to take
in the view
Indonesia is a country of geological and biological diversity. Tourism is one of the main economies of the country, but the facilities available at these tourist destinations are still inadequate for both local and foreign visitors. The brief asked to design a rest room which can enhance the experience of the user visiting an underdeveloped tourism destination.

Ciletuh Geopark is a popular tourist destination located in the west coast of Java (1 million visitors in 2017). In 2018 Ciletuh Geopark received the UNESCO Global Geopark Award. The number of visitors to the park is expected to increase, making it the main ecotourism destination in the west coast. The chosen site is located at Puncak Darma, is the highest point in the park. This point is strategic, since all visitors must pass this point before entering the rest of the park. The site boasts a full view of the Ciletuh bay and its surrounding rice fields, waterfalls, and islands.

Currently, Puncak Darma is the main rest area for tourists visiting the park because of its location and access. Along the road, locals have built makeshift stores, restrooms, and even an observation deck. The intervention was aimed at questioning how we can provide the basic function (rest room and prayer room) while creating a unique experience that can take in the view.

The building was designed to be a holistic rest area with three main functions, stacked in three levels. A ramp on the parameter of the building connects all the levels of the building, while allowing the users to see all of the surrounding park on their way up.  At the ground level, all the restrooms (including one for disabled) are placed. On the second floor is the prayer room complete with ablution and transition area. At the top, a slanted roof becomes the observation deck overlooking the park. This roof becomes a gentle amphitheater where visitors can rest while enjoying the view.

Buildability is another aspect taken into the design. The whole building is made with materials that are readily available in the area. The structure is made with a simple concrete portal. Local wood and brick craftsman make the façade elements of the building. Wooden fins are used around the ramp, while a variety of bricks are used depending on how open the room should be.
