Moving Records
Personal Project 2021
Moving Records is a conceptual redesign of album artwork for a selection of instrumental albums. These albums are special to me because they evoke strong emotions through their minimal, abstract compositions.
This project aims to create a vinyl album cover that conveys each album’s sentiment through motion. In much the same way a record player plays back the music from a vinyl record, the album cover plays back the animation of the album artwork.

Albums in Motion
The album cover is designed to animate as the album sleeve is pulled out. This is achieved by small die-cut holes in the cover which when in motion reveal an animation printed on the album sleeve.
Each frame of the animation is broken into tiny slices stacked vertically on top of each other. As the sleeve is pulled out of the cover, the holes sequentially play the animation slices creating the illusion of motion.
From front to back, each album’s design is defined by movement. A wave pattern, emulating the look of sound waves, creates the album’s layout and grid.

Vinyl
When played on a record player, even the vinyl’s label comes to life. The dots on the exterior of the label appear to animate using a simple zoetrope technique. These animations tie back to the design of the rest of the album.
Additionally, the surface of the label features braille for the audiophiles who may be visually impaired.
