Shamash Mesopotamian god of justice
Shamash was the ancient Mesopotamian god of the Sun, justice, morality and truth. Initially he was worshipped under name Utu in Sumer from the very earliest times. The oldest documents mentioning him date to around 3500 BCE, during the beginning of Sumerian writing. Later on the Babylonians worshipped him as Shamash. Some scholars say that in Assyrio-Babylonian language Shamash means the Sun. As god of justice and the Sun, Shamash continued to be worshipped in Sumer, Babylon, Akkad and Assyria for well over 3,000 years until the end of Mesopotamian culture.
Shamash and the Code of Hammurabi
King Hammurabi of Babylon (modern day Iraq) receives the laws from Shamash. Shamash was the ancient Mesopotamian god of the Sun, justice, morality and truth. This is part of the famous scene inscribed on a stone stele called the Code of Hammurabi — a Babylonian legal text written 3750 years ago. The stone stele is on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany. It is a plaster copy, made directly from the original, which is on display at the Louvre in Paris, France.
