This group of paintings was done throughout the summer of 2008. I had the opportunity to attend the Visual Arts Program at the Chautauqua Institution. The environment is a focus of my work and along with concentrating on issues of scale and form. Each painting is a struggle to deconstruct and flatten the illusionary space and to reaffirm the canvas as an object. Then the issue arises of how to pull the painting back out and create space through particular forms in order to have something to engage the viewer.
