The Southern Reach Trilogy | Trilogy Book Cover Design
The Southern Reach Trilogy is a series of novels by Jeff VanderMeer first published in 2014—Annihilation, Authority, and Acceptance. Each book follows a different character as they seek to understand Area X, an alien-like stretch of land where no explorer is able to keep their sanity. It is full of surreal visuals that involve the nature around them. I decided to illustrate some of the visions these characters see or dream about while exploring Area X. I was inspired by depictions of scary biblical angels, combining many parts of nature to create something familiar but also disturbing.
The Southern Reach trilogy is a colorful series with bold illustrations of monstrous animals. Once the books are open and being read, you can see the full extent of these alien-like animals, as the reader is being sucked into the insanity of Area X.
