Raspadura - recycled cardboard collection

Raspadura collection focuses on exploring the physical and aesthetic performance of pressed cardboard. It is comprised of one table lamp and three pieces of furniture for interior use. Discarded packaging cardboard was recycled through a process that involved three steps: the cardboard sheets collection, the shredding to turn the cardboard into an elastic paste and the transferred into molds, which undergo the final pressing. The collection takes its name from the material appearance, closely related to a popular Cuban candy (raspadura) made from the cane sugar juice.

There are a few options to recycle non-metallic raw material in Cuba. This project represents a step in thisregard. Despite the fact that the pressed cardboard appearance is related with the hand-crafted aesthetic, the shape design and its configuration process were thought taking in mind industrial production criteria. Most of the molds were made of 3d printed plastic.

This project encourages the value of pressed cardboard in the manufacturing of products for indoor residential use. It also aims to change the preconception about the cardboard hand-crafted paradigm. Last but not least, the recycling process could bring more jobs for raw materials collectors in Cuba.
