Folktale Week 2021

Prompt 1: Moon

I chose the Sioux goddess, Hanwi. After her husband, Wi the sun god, let his mortal mistress take Hanwi's place at a banquet, Hanwi was humiliated. Her husband was punished to rule only the day and separated from his wife while she ruled the night, forever hiding her face from him in shame.
Prompt 2: Dream

I chose the myth of the Sandman who puts children to sleep with his magical sand, giving them beautiful dreams.
Prompt 3: Awakening

According to an Irish legend, Fionn mac Cumhail, Ireland's greatest warrior, sleeps in a cave within a mountain, surrounded by his fellow warriors, the Fianna, until the Fianna's battle cry is sounded three times, awakening Fionn and the Fianna to protect Ireland once more.
Prompt 4: Feast

A Norse poem called 'Lokasenna' tells of Loki, the Norse trickster god, getting into a flyting (verbal duel) with another god at a feast.
Prompt 5: Bird

I picked the Lenape legend of the Rainbow Crow. The Rainbow Crow sacrificed its beautiful colours and voice to bring back fire to his suffering friends, turning into the black crow we know today.
Prompt 6: River

According to the urban legends of Jamaica, its rivers are inhabited by a beautiful mermaid called 'River Mumma' and all of the fish are her children. If you touch or ever look at her, River Mumma will drag you underwater. But if you catch her, all of the fish and water will run out.
Prompt 7: Sky

In Ancient Egypt, Nut was the goddess of the sky, covered in stars and arching over the earth.
