As a part of my diploma project I’ve created a book dedicated to the origins of road signs and their impact on visual culture throughout the years.
The evolution of road signs took several decades of precise work and innovation both
in design and technologies. I decided to shed some light on the intricate system
of signage, which most of us take for granted, and analyze the alter ego of road signs
in different art fields as they compose a unique language of colors and symbols and outgrow their initial purpose.
The book consists of 3 chapters, which are reflected in the name of the project. I conducted research on the history of road signs and included break-through moments, then I analyzed the function of road signage and how its design prevents confusion on the road, and lastly I collected various art pieces that revolve around road signs and interpret them as valuable symbols of visual culture.
