Plastiform study (hand tools)

Sophomore-year form study project.

“Plastiform” is mutable and pliant, filling a space instead of holding it,
conforming to the shapes of the human body.

Humans have been making hand tools for millenia. It's arguable that making and refining these tools—and imagining how we might make them better—is what actually made us human. With this in mind, we were asked to make a set of hand tools inspired by the age-old forms and functions of our Paleolithic ancestors.  The aesthetics, however, would be completely different—refined for our modern eyes and crafted with modern materials and processes.

For my set, I created two multifunctional tools: a hand-axe / adze, and a knife / awl.
The first hand tool can be held as an axe, for chopping, or as an adze, for scraping and knapping (precisely flaking stone to shape it).
My second tool can be held as a knife, for carving and cutting fabric or hide. Its sharp point can also be used as an awl to puncture and pierce.
