Industrial Structures

The six images seen here are the end result of my final assignment for my Photography unit, where I was provided with a brief that instructed me to gather thirty images of a specific subject or theme, where I would then choose six of my favourite to edit in Photoshop. Alongside this, I would also need to produce three contact sheets with my images, keep a workbook to evidence my process, and an evaluation that explaining my work and choices. I decided that for my theme as well as subject I would photograph industrial structures and buildings, a decision I made as I find them interesting as well as being inspired by German couple Bernd and Hilla Becher, an artistic duo who made a career capturing images of industrial structure in both Europe as well as the united states. For Photoshop, I had already planned to give each image a black and white colour scheme, as I was inspired by the dream like surreal images of photographer Jerry Uselmann and wanted to achieve a similar tone. I began by visiting the Muir of Ord and Inverness Industrial estates in order to capture my images. While exploring and taking my photographs, I repeatedly used the worm’s eye camera viewpoint, which I achieved by kneeling and looking up at the object, as I wanted to communicate their size. After creating my three contact sheets, I chose six of my favourite images to edit in Photoshop, were I change the colour balance for each image in order to make them black and white. I then added to this by adjusting the levels and curves, which change the lighting of the images.
By the end of the project, I had successfully met all of the brief requirements as well as expressing my chosen theme and subject in a way I found satisfying.
