Modern Aviation Editorial Spread
Jacob Steadman

Rationale:

The process of designing these editorial spreads came directly from the title of the article, “Modern Aviation.” Focusing on this idea of ‘modern’ led me to the direction of the final design. I wanted my design to replicate the feel of modern-day airline brands and logos. They’re very simple, sleek, and minimalistic.
‘Ubiquitous,’ was the font I landed on for my display type. It makes an impact. My body copy is ‘Bakersfield,’ a serif font, which paired beautifully with the display font I used.
When choosing imagery. I wanted to incorporate something that has been a part of commercial flying since the start of it all, luggage. Placed inside of the pockets of the suitcase are tickets that I designed and printed with the article written on them in place of ticket information.
For the overall composition, I kept the idea of a modern and minimalist design. The first spread feels very open in terms of the relationship of the image, display type, and body copy. This creates negative space. I opened my second spread with a large pull quote to lead the viewers eye down into the beginning of the article and on to the next page. We still get a sense of a lot of negative space and minimalism in the second spread despite the increased number of elements. The empty space behind the pull quote flows into the image on second page and through the body copy and into the side bar of information.
