New Deacons Ordained for Trenton, New Jersey, Diocese

Alongside his professional work in the Hamilton, New Jersey area, John Barrett is an active member of his faith community. In 2020, John Barrett became one of six deacons ordained by the bishop in the Diocese of Trenton.

The deaconate process in the Diocese of Trenton, five years long and marked by intensive study and spiritual reflection, began in 2015 for the candidates. At that time, they learned the duties of the position and the sacrifices to prepare for it. The candidates announced their intension to become deacons in October 2016 before a convocation of ordained deacons at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Plainsboro. Five were married, so their wives also pledged their dedication to assisting their husbands.

The six completed their deaconate training in June 2020. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., ordained the candidates during a mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold. The candidates originated from diverse professional backgrounds and ranged in age from 51 to 65.
