While all projects are rewarding and involve a lot of back and forth, the following four projects from my Graphic Design III class has been the most fun to create.
The first project was a Sci-Fi movie poster. The final poster was to be delivered by March 30th, 2022. To start I created a few quick, yet not the best drawn, thumbnails. Regardless of their poor illustrative look, I was able to use the brainstorming sketches to then mock-up four posters. Doing this part of the design process really helps me channel the many ideas I usually have racing through my mind, and guides me in weeding out what doesn't work and what does.
Taking a minimum of five images, we were to layer them and make the poster look like all five images work in uniform. Creating the WIPs took away the challenge of finalizing what five images I wanted use and how I might want to layer them. It was really fun to play around with each poster and playing with the blending options with the images.
The hours of work and constant going back and forth, created a poster I was pretty proud of to show off. Some things I watched out for when layering the images and placing text was the legibility and making sure the poster doesn't seem overcrowded and confusing. I am still working on making fine tune adjustments to my poster as I could always make it more professional and ensure I have high quaility images. With this project, I felt more confident in learning how images blend and how layering them can create certain effects.
My second case study took place March 2, 2022. It focused on something I had never attempted and had to do a lot of research on to make sure my project was similar to a real life annual report. The annual report was on a ficitional company. I chose "Be You-ty" a cosmetics company that was women owned and focused on diversity and representing those who are a minority. This project required a lot of statistical research and basic layout inspiration searching.
The goal of the project was to create an annual report that showed good use of typography, and imaging sourcing and citing. My main challenge was making sure each page looked looked good with the rest of the pages, but still have a different look to each page. In this project learned how to create graphs using illustrator and bettered my skills in hierachy and exporting for print-ready projects. To make this annual report more credible and strong I would look into making the text actual paragraphs that can show a good use of writing skill and creating credible statements.
The third project, our first project was creating a logo, promotional/advertising material, and merchandise mockups for a conference. The ficitional conference I created was called "Think Big" and was for photographers looking to network and learn more about the photography life. Above is the advertisment posters I created to promote the conference. Using images and layering text to create a easy to read poster was hard. I chose to offer the main information like: Date, place, and a QR code that would guide the viewer to a more in depth website for the conference.
Starting with the logo first, I created a few thumbnails and create some finals to see what worked best. With the help of my classmates I finalized my logo which you see on the far right. Creating a brand guide (far right) to help make sure we all material stays consistent and can help other designers who might view the document can know what colors, text, and visuals are. This project really helped me get an idea of how to organize and create documents that can help keep a consistent use of color and text.
The last case study would be on the bottle label project. This project required us to make a drink label for our choice of beverage. We were to figure out what our audience is and then disucss the brands voice and their motto/message. I went with a hard seltzer called "Get Lit" and it offered a higher alcohol percentage than other brands. I had a few different ideas on how to go about this project. I created 40 thumbnails and created 4 roughs from that.
The four roughs helped me see what looked most modern and could stand out on the shelves compared to the other seltzers that are sold. Also with some feedback from my peers, I was able to start creating my final label.
I thought my final label was really different and could be on a actual bottle. I added the information most labels have to help really sell the label and make it look realistic. Once again I was able to refine my skills on illustrator and use everything I learned from my past projects and apply it to this project. Typography, image sourcing, and even researching competition allowed me to create a more stronger piece.
No matter the hardships I encountered when creating all of the projects above, I had a bigger gain in feeling comfortable with my programs and my work. I continue to find inspiration and learn from my surroundings to further make my work more unique and desirable to anyone who may view my portfolio. Thank you for looking at my case study today. Happy designing.
