TASK 1 | MAGAZINE CRITIQUE
Magazine structure
Critique

What resources did the designer use to visually represent the structure of the content, to create a visual hierarchy on the page?
The designer used a drop cap as the main header for the article of the spread which immediately draws your attention to the main text. The images are also aligned with the baseline grid system and has an overall uniform finish. The folio acts as a frame for the page and clearly attributes the magazine to the article.

What do you think works? What doesn't and why?
The page is well set up and follows a clear grid structure, the designer has also chosen to have a decent amount of white space over the top of both pages of the spread. This makes the spread look light and easy to follow, although as the images are very descriptive in themselves it could have been nice for these to be utilised more.

Design decisions

The decision to blow up the image by Rebecca Baumann was based on its depth and striking colours, which related to the essence of what the article was trying to say. I kept the body copy in a three column grid as there was quite a bit of text and it looked to heavy in a single or double column. I also decided to swap the drop cap E for the heading editorial for the lack of space and to condense the information. Using a pull quote I brought readers into the content of the text so it could grab interest while flipping through the pages. Pushing the other two images to the bottom of the page was done to create white space. As I was struggling with the amount of information but didn’t want to omit any information or imagery as I felt they served a purpose for the spread.
