Illustrations and design for a play containing six scenes. Each scene consists of an interview with a famous person from the photography industry. They are the main characters: Lars Boering, Joan Fontcuberta, Hugh Grey Jr, Martin P..., Antoine D’agata and others... It's a project by Asya Zhetvina for the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague.
With my illustrations I sought to support the ironic tone of the play. I drew partially with my left hand and incorporated my daughter's drawings into the illustrations to give the visuals a messy and naive feeling. Because the play is written in the style of a "mockumentary" I wanted the visuals to seem ridiculous and caricature-like. Looking through the book gives the reader the impression that they are experiencing a fever dream or even nightmare.
"I have chosen this form because I can best show the hypocrisy of the photography industry. For me, it is important to include elements of irony, humor, and absurdity in each conversation in order to create a satirical play in which is a commenting on the photographic and art industry, the structure of ‘the white cube,’ and more specifically about how photojournalism claims to tell the ‘truth’."
