symbiotic architecture

The project examined the possibility of implementing a biological concept of symbiotic relationship of lichens in the field of architecture with the aim of structuring architectural forms. By analyzing the physical appearance, structure, as well as the fractal geometry present in the structure of lichens,  it was investigated how an organic, natural structure can be translated into an architectural one. The question of creating innovative strategies that achieve the concept of mutualistic architecture by introducing methods from biomimicry was raised, all for the sake of creating a circular, sustainable and regenerative design. In accordance with lichen, as a living organism that hangs on rock structures, the conceptual tower that also performs the function of a bridge, is located in Iceland within the Fjaðarrgljufur canyon. The tower would represent a scientific research and tourist center in order to encourage the development of tourism, which is already present to a certain extent at the location. In terms of design, the concept of mutualism is realized between the basic structure of the building (the tower) and the facade, which in its appearance resembles a formation of lichens, and which as such form a symbiotic relationship that functions as a single entity.
