Jimmy Buffet x Kitsch Design Catalog

Jimmy Buffet x Kitsch Design Catalog
The prompt for this project was to combine a music artist and a design movement to create a five spread catalog. I ended up choosing Jimmy Buffet who has a very quirky and eclectic music style ranging from ballads to country pop and folk rock. For me the challenge was to find a design style that could highlight his lyrics and style without being too predictable or too modern. Kitsch, in german meaning "bad taste", I thought could capture his quirky, almost "bad" musical style (nothing against Jimmy Buffet. I do love a good Cheeseburger in Paradise sing along). Content wise I tried to mimic the look of old diner placemat menus and drive-in restaurant signs. To feed into the kitsch aesthetic more, I collaged elements by cutting out certain objects from old (and new) photos to create unrealistic situations. Like the classic "Attack of the 50ft woman" poster, portraying a giant woman destroying an interstate full of cars, on spread 10-11 I included people diving through soda tabs and into martini glasses. Overall, I really enjoy how this project turned out but there are some tweaks I would like to go back and change to make all the spreads more cohesive stylistically and color palette wise.
