We enjoyed participating with Mrs Frederick’s and Mrs Holman’s class at Southside Elementary for the Fall semester. From day one, they were all very accomodating and eager to have us in class. Our project linked science and art through digital photo capture of scientific slides then manipulating the images to create patterns and abstract art. They also learned order of operations which links math methods to art. The students were very open and receptive.
Creating patterns is an ancient form of art. Offering such an experience to these students was somewhat magical and insightful to see how organically they came up with samples and organized them in unnexpected ways. In the end this was a true celebration of their innate creativity, and what an honor was to witness such phenomena.
The project planted a seed in the minds of the children, that they could learn a program as difficult as Photoshop and create beautiful pictures. Now it’s another medium to explore for them. It was a pleasure to work with. Mrs Frederick and Mrs Holman. They are amazing teachers and above and be- yond the children were awesome, they gave us a sense of purpose and I love them for that.
