We are strong believers in the Mary Poppins rule of political advertising: a spoonful of sugar sometimes helps the medicine go down. In this case, the medicine was a strong contrast: Roger Kahn favored making English the official language, and he opposed giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens. His opponent took the other side of those controversial issues. Our goal was to hit the contrast hard, but do it in a way that made the attack easier to take.
