American Photographs is a way of portraying a country while at the same time exploring differences and similarities and revealing the hidden. The 2000 senators of the 50 state senates - whose photographs are the basis for this work - are elected by and represent the people of their state. Every piece is an arithmetic average of all the senators’ faces in the particular state, so their image can be considered a representation of the state - the prototypical citizen. They represent every race and gender in every one of the 50 states - or do they?
