Louis Stelfox: 3D Environment Artist
Lois Stelfox works as an Environment Artist. His skills include 3D modeling, digital sculpting, lighting, PBR texturing, and more.
I actually came across his work on The Rookies. I was very impressed with his detailed work and the beautiful lighting and texturing.
For Phase 2 of this assignment, I was tasked to try my hand at recreating a piece of my choice. I chose Louis Stelfox's dartboard. While he designed the dartboard in Substance Designer, something I have absolutely no knowledge in using, I created a small set in Maya and created some basic textures using the limited knowledge I have on Substance Painter and some graphic work in Illustrator. The lighting was done using Maya's Arnold Rendering.
From beginning to end, I just did some blocky floor, walls, and counter. For the dart board I created a cylinder, flattened it, and added more subdivisions to give it a more round look at the size I made it. I did some brief texturing with Adobe Substance Painter and just extracted the textures and figured out the mapping and consistency for the walls and floor. Since Stelfox created his dart board in Substance Designer, again something I have no knowledge in using, I took an easier route and made a quick mock-up in Adobe Illustrator of what I wanted the dart board to look like. Once I got all of the textures into the scene, which took longer than expected due to some objects having an inconsistent appearance than intended, I began lighting the scene. I used some simple area lights on the dart board, left wall, and the counter. The light on the dart board has a yellow hue along with some temperature adjustment to give off a warmer color. Moving away from the board I moved more towards white light and less temperature for simple illumination. Outside sits a skydome light with a greyish, low-intensity light for a little more. One thing I'll immediately recognize is that I need to learn Substance in its entirety because there are way more possibilities for texturing using it and Maya only goes so far with limited experience. I'm still practically learning the ropes of Maya and modeling and I want to work on it more, but I consider this a start.
