The Hayao Miyazaki Film Festival Programme

For the Image in Motion module during my final year of study we were asked to create a programme for a fictional film festival on a topic of our choosing, whether a director, particular theme or conventions of certain films. The festival was to contain at least 10 films, which are all related due to the chosen theme, hence their presence in the festival.

I chose to base my festival on the works of Hayao Miyazaki, a famed director, creator and producer of many Japanese animated films (such as Spirited Away which was a huge inspiration to me) and I also wanted to use this opportunity to see his other works.

Each film page contains the basic plot, background information and a short list of interesting facts viewers may not know about the film. Miyazaki’s films are very colourful and this was something that I wanted to communicate throughout the programme. Thus the pages also use different colours, with each colour based on a feature of each film, such as the page for The Castle of Cagliostro using orange due to Lupin's iconic orange suit, and Nausicaä & Princess Mononoke using green since they both have a strong environmentalist theme.
To match the colours and make each film more distinguishable I created an icon for each film page, each representing a character (or characters) from the respective film:
1. The Castle of Cagliostro     2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind     3. Laputa: Castle in the Sky4. My Neighbour Totoro     5. Kiki's Delivery Service     6. Porco Rosso     7. Princess Mononoke     8. Spirited Away9. Howl's Moving Castle     10. Ponyo
To make the relationship between the films even more apparent I also created icons that represent recurring themes found in Miyazaki’s works:
A. Boy & Girl Protagonists     B. Childhood & Maturity     C. Environmentalism     D. Feminism     E. Flight
F. Japanese Culture     G. Moral Ambiguity     H. No Villain     I. Pacifism     J. The Power of Love     K. Water & Fluidity
The finished programme is shown below, please note that all screenshots used in the pages were taken from the films and that copyright for each belongs to their respective owners. I will also release the programme as a free download shortly, if you are interested please email me at sean [dot] grannum [at] gmail.com .
