Same Shape, Different Meaning

The word “connotation” derives from the Latin connotare, meaning to “mark in addition to or along with.” To distinguish connotations from denotations, the “in addition to” and the
“along with” are key. Connotations seem to arise from the happenstance of time and place, even the vagaries of personal life experience, whereas denotations seem obvious and “true” for everyone.
For this project, two exact compositions using shapes were created, and changed their meaning using color. The audience for this visual display would be toddlers who are learning to talk and identify elements in the world around them.
