This is a tale of two brands. If you were a child of the 1980s or 1990s, NERF, with its soft action oriented toys, was probably a part of your life. Knockaround on the other hand, makes reasonably priced fashion-forward and theme-based sunglasses. In this collaboration, they teamed up with NERF to develop a line of nostalgia inspired sunglasses with strong enough visuals to appeal to those who were born years later.
Working directly with Knockaround, I developed retro inspired images to first generate early interest and then showcase the glasses to drive traffic through their digital channels. We decided to use the NERF foam darts as the primary retro inspired element as it had the greatest ability to make a dynamic image. NERF had no product imagery to utilize, so we chose to recreate them in 3D which had the added bonus of being much more flexible for compositing.
The NERF collaboration was a huge success, not just in sales, but generating interest and traffic for Knockaround's core sunglass lineup.
