Outdoor goes Indoor – The Variety of Simplicity

A pocket lamp as strong as automobile headlights and almost as small as a smartphone. A user-based design, specifically geared toward keeping mountain bikers safe on darker trails. Made for flashlight connoisseurs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Used for daytime adventures in the wilderness as well as when the sun begins to set and the surroundings get dark.

However, after all these activities, it simply disappears back into some drawer.
And what a pity this is, thought the initiators of the “Lupine Transformers” design competition. The task they gave to a bunch of young designers from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts: How to integrate a high-performance outdoor lamp into an indoor atmosphere without simultaneously compromising the style and elegance of a modern living space?

Young German designer Maximilian Schmid came up with a more than convincing answer: he presented an iconic take on what a high-performance outdoor lamp is capable of achieving, apart from its primary design function of illuminating bike trips on rocky roads and in darkness.

His model “Spot on” was able to convince the competition jury of “Lupine Transformers” advertised by Publicis Munich and Lupine Lighting Systems and mentored by professors Urs and Carmen Greutmann from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. His ingeniously simple, yet highly effective solution was to transform the light beam from the flashlight into a cone-shaped lampshade and thus into a fitment with a stylish shape. Simplicity and a variety of possible applications were paramount for Max when developing his lamp.
Through a 3D-printed connecting piece, the outdoor pocket lamp is clipped onto the lampshade which is produced from easy-care polypropylene. The lampshade itself comes in two sizes and can easily be assembled and dissembled, thus making it a valuable travel commodity. Depending on the color of the ground the lamp is placed on, the color of the lampshade will change accordingly, enabling an infinite and individual range of colors. “Spot on” brings a breath of fresh air into the living rooms of style-conscious sportspeople and pulls the Lupine Piko back out of the drawer once it’s completed its outdoor mission.
