A variety of overlapping ribbon patterns. Flat and shaded versions.
First, I created a red rectangle. 90px wide by 160px high.

Second, I create 2 thinner yellow rectangles (15px wide by 160px high) and place them on top of the main rectangle and group them all together.

Third, I went to the appearance panel and added a 'distort and transform' effect. Rotated the group 90 degrees and moved vertically 125px.
From here, it is possible to create the flat version. To make the grid, I used Object->Repeat->Grid. Then from the repeat options chose 'brick by column', made the vertical spacing 0 and horizontal spacing -35. Could also be done using the Object->Pattern method with same settings.
To make the shaded version, first I needed to make a 90px wide by 40px high rectangle with a vertical gradient fill. Default is black to white. I changed both ends of the gradient to be black and lowered the opacity of one end to 0%.
With the gradient created, I just duplicated and rotated it 90 degrees. Then aligned the gradients to the top and bottom of the main rectangle. Finally, from the layers panel I moved these gradient rectangles into the group the red and yellow rectangles were in so they would be repeated as well by the transform effect.
From this point, the same process is used to create the grid as the flat version.
Object->Repeat->Grid. 'Brick by Column' option. 0 vertical spacing and -35 horizontal spacing. Using Object->Pattern with the same settings can also be used to create this effect.
Many variations can be made by altering the colours of the rectangles.
