Universal Design as User Experience

While working with Universal Design in physical spaces, I realized that we experience the rules and requirements of our environments in the same way as we do in the digital space. If the ask of us is too high we cannot complete our goal, and we get frustrated. If we consider several pain points during our day they will negatively amplify our experience.

Consequently, the framework used to map user journeys in digital- and service design are applicable for mapping the journey of experiencing Universal Design in our environments. The tools developed to ensure a good customer experience and easy to use services can be used to discover and define small, but important points of friction and interaction where our environments ask too much of some of us.

Applying these tools, as shown in the user journey of Silje above, might empower us to strategically plan and execute satisfactory experiences in our environments that users, regardless of capabilities, might enjoy.
