The Sea Takes No Prisoners. Book design and cartography

The Sea Takes No Prisoners
Book design and cartography for Peter Clutterbuck

The book, provisionally the author's private project, is a vivid and informative account of a series of bold, not to say extremely dangerous, voyages that author undertook as a teenager in the late 1960s in an open Wayfarer sailing dinghy, without a cabin, keel or engine, and without any of the electronic aids that would be available today. From the Hamble, on the south coast of England, he and a companion braved the English Channel, the open Atlantic, the Bay of Biscay, the North Sea and the Baltic, sailing as far as Marseille to the south and Oslo to the North. As his narrative makes clear, they were lucky to survive, but in the course of these voyages he amassed a wealth of sailing experience, which the book also distils into a helpful practical guide to any small boat sailor considering ventures offshore. Peter Clutterbuck, now a senior petroleum engineer, has also been a professional international yachtsman and record breaking sailing captain. My brief was for the cover design and full illustrated page layout, and for the creation of numerous maps illustrating particular passages and crises.
