Digital Ethnography – Data Physicalization

Only relying on big data sets researchers miss out on deeper insights into user behavior. Data does not only include measurable numbers but can be much more complex. Ethnographical research makes data valuable in terms of quality and depth and is an extension of traditional research based on big data. This Data Physicalization helps participants express themselves through the simple creation of flexible, dynamic visualizations. Putting different colored tokens on the board, the participants actively visualize their data. In this case, the topic was Recreational Walks. Participants described their motivations and decision-making when it comes to walks in the Kolding kommune.
