The Brief
This sketch was an independent study done in abstraction, wherein I began with an object and broke it down into its most basic shapes. The subject matter here is the skull of a dog.
The Composition
An abstraction of a dog's skull
This piece best displays my drawing ability through both the particularity of detail as well as an understanding of the subject. The first drawing displays an acute attention to detail and understanding of the subject, with shading in the eye sockets to imply depth within the skull, cracks and lines within the bone, and differing line weights to show three-dimensionality. This is compounded the shadow beneath the skull showing an illuminated area where light is able to pierce through the hole of the braincase. The following drawings represent an abstraction of the original skull into simpler shapes, which display an understanding of the subject's form. The primary elements of the dog's skull are shown to be understood through abstraction, and I believe this displays a higher level of drawing ability.
