This bottle symbolizes a vagrant. The bottle is fragile because it is made of glass. Human life is fragile and has to be handled with care. This bottle is still intact even though it had rolled into the parking lot where the asphalt is crumbled. There is emptiness inside the bottle just like there is some unknown emptiness inside of the vagrant.

This photo was created by sandwiching two negatives together. I love to layer images in Photoshop and I thought layering or sandwiching negatives would be a challenging experiment I wanted to tackle in the dark room. I spent many hours over a few days looking at my contact sheets and playing around with my negatives. I wanted two images that would look nice together and have a meaning as well. I photographed the two images on different days. I had no ideas for a negative sandwich when shooting these photos. Clock tower and tree branches are one photo and the KAWS sculpture “Companion (Passing Through)” is another photo. I call this photo “Time is my companion” because in time one will heal from pain and suffering.

This is a closeup of evidence left behind from a suspected vagrant. The evidence of the suspected vagrant was left directly outside the main entrance to the shuttered business. There were about 12 empty wine bottles and 2 bags of trash left behind. I felt like the person who left this evidence behind would return at any moment. Maybe he or she went to the liquor store and was coming back. I felt like I was invading their space and their unhappy hour.

 

I thought about how the automotive service shop was once a place where people went to get their vehicles repaired. I imagined lots of oil changes and tire services being completed at this business. It is now vacant. Now this is the site where someone sits and tries to get repaired by drinking wine.
